Council received a request from a group of parents regarding the existing No Parking restriction on Longueville Road outside Currambena School, which currently operates 8.00–9.30 am and 2.30–4.00 pm on school days. The restriction was originally introduced to improve traffic flow and safety during peak school periods.

Parents advised that the current restriction does not adequately accommodate infant pick-up and drop-off arrangements. Unlike older students, infants must be collected in person, requiring parents to enter the school and sign children in and out, a process that typically takes longer than a brief kerbside stop.

Parents noted that the existing restriction is more suitable for quick drop-off and pick-up of older students, but creates practical difficulties for families with younger children, often resulting in parents parking further away and walking back with infants, which they consider less safe and less convenient.

What is being proposed?

In response to the petition, Council is proposing to alter the existing No Parking restriction with 10-minute parking, operating during the same time periods (8.00–9.30 am and 2.30–4.00 pm on school days).

Benefits of the proposal

  • Better reflect the operational needs of families with infants
  • Allow sufficient time for parents to enter the school and sign children in or out
  • Maintain parking turnover and discourage long-term parking during peak periods
  • Balance school access needs with traffic efficiency and safety on Longueville Road
