Lane Cove Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019, becoming the 50th Australian Council to join other Governments Internationally in declaring a climate emergency. A climate emergency declaration acknowledges that climate change poses a threat to our society and requires immediate action by all levels of Government.
Council has been working to reduce our emissions and respond to the impact of a changing climate for many years. We adopted our first Sustainability Action Plan in 2006, and a Climate Resilience Action Plan in 2021.
We are now transitioning our Climate Resilience Plan into a new Climate Emergency Plan to guide the direction of actions to respond to this issue over the next 4 years.
During the August 2026 Council meeting, the Draft Climate Emergency Plan (CEP) was approved for public exhibition, where it is now available for our community to view and provide feedback until closing on Sunday 4 October. After this stage, feedback will be reviewed and the final report will go to another Council meeting to seek adoption.
The survey is available below on this page, however, if you would prefer to submit a written submission on the Draft Climate Emergency Plan, you can do so by emailing sustainability@lanecove.nsw.gov.au and referencing SU11101 by the closing on Sunday 4 October 2026.
How we consulted with the community so far
An online Have Your Say survey was available for 8 weeks to capture the communities initial ideas on concerns and ideas, closing 19 April 2026. Council ran 2 community workshops in March 2026 for the community to learn more about the issue of climate change and what Council has been doing so far, and to provide their input into the CEP. Council also ran 2 pop-up engagements in March (2 hours each in Lane Cove Library and Lane Cove Plaza) for community members to drop by and share their ideas and participate in short activities. Additionally various Council committees were also engaged with to complete activities and share their expertise. The next stage is the public exhibition of the draft plan which is currently live and can be viewed from the Documents tab with the survey for feedback open until Sunday 4 October.
