Council has received a request from St Michael’s School to relocate the existing pedestrian crossing on Longueville Road, North of Alpha Road, approximately 44 metres to the north of its current location.

The current arrangement provides limited short-term parking in front of the school, contributing to congestion and queuing on surrounding streets, particularly during afternoon pick-up times.

A pedestrian survey undertaken between 7:30am and 9:00am indicates that approximately 80% of pedestrians approach the crossing from the northern side.

What is being proposed?

Council proposes to:

  • Relocate the existing pedestrian crossing on Longueville Road, North of Alpha Road approximately 44 metres north of its current location on Longueville Road
  • Increase the length of ‘No Parking’ (school pick-up) zone outside the school from approximately 19.4 metres (3 vehicles) to 56.5 metres (9 vehicles).
  • Adjust associated signage and line marking, including:
    • Introduction of full-time ‘No Stopping’ at the school frontage near the crossing
    • Relocation of the existing bus zone to immediately follow the extended pick-up area
    • Minor adjustments to surrounding parking restrictions between Alpha Road and Dorritt Street
    • Remove the existing crossing
    • Associated lighting to for the new crossing

Driveway access to surrounding properties will remain unchanged.

Benefits of the proposal

  • Increased pick-up capacity is expected to reduce queuing on Longueville Road, Alpha Road and Austin Street
  • More efficient pick-up operations will minimise delays during peak school periods
  • Relocating the crossing closer to pedestrian desire lines may reduce instances of mid-block crossing (jaywalking)
  • The relocated bus stop will better align with school access and student movements
