• It is blocking the drains for the water play, and adjacent stormwater drainage infrastructure
• It causes drainage and maintenance issues in the adjacent toilet block
• It is getting tracked across the paving and creating issues with mechanisms in the escalators down to the grocery stores
• It is getting worked into the adjacent rubber softfall accelerating deterioration of the material, and requiring additional maintenance 
• The sand is causing accelerated wear on the rope climbing elements on the large play structure
• The sandpit itself requires greater than anticipated cleaning + maintenance which is required for safe and enjoyable play.

Council has encountered maintenance issues regarding sand across the facility since installation. Various strategies have been attempted to address these concerns however it has become apparent that it is not feasible to maintain the sandpit in its current form.

Bark play mulch provides similar play value for children and is a relatively quick process to install in the current playspace whilst we collect feedback from the community regarding the evolution of the space. This ensures minimal disruption to the community whilst addressing the immediate issues in the short term.

We anticipate that following initial community consultation, design and documentation could take approximately 12months with construction aiming to begin in mid 2026
